Our Director of National Intelligence By John Russell Deane

The President must have been reading Alice in Wonderland when he appointed James Crapper as the Director of National Intelligence. If there is any irony in linking an official with an office, i.e. Crapper and Intelligence, this wins first prize. He is the one who coordinates everything the nation knows about our national security, especially terrorism. Crapper does not surface often but when he does, people listen.

In a television interview, Crapper seemed to telegraph his lack of knowledge of terrorist activities that were a matter of public knowledge. These are not secrets which may not have made it to his desk. In an interview with Diane Sawyer, he seemed completely unaware of a series of arrests of terrorists conducted that day in England. It was stunning. I commit the video to your review.

In addressing a House Committee, Crapper surprised the panel when he stated that the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt is “largely secular.” He described them as heterogeneous, as a group which pursues social ends. Their purposes are the betterment of political order He said that they eschewed violence and had decried Al Qaeda as a perversion of Islam. Apparently the crack intelligence community had failed to Google the Brotherhood’s website. Presumably, Crapper would see virtue in having the Muslim Brotherhood at the helm of Middle-Eastern nations.

In a recent Senate Hearing, despite the Administration’s position in support of the opposition to the Gaddafi regime, Crapper stated that the opposition had lost momentum and ultimately Gaddafi would prevail. While we have not been forthcoming in providing support to the opposition, one would assume they did not need that vote of confidence. Clapper was asked to name the country that poses the biggest threat to the U.S. He responded: Russia and China, with China a bit higher because we do not have an armament treaty with them. That sure takes the pressure off North Korea and Iran. Senator Levin, noticeably stunned, said that China and Russia would not be the countries he expected from Crapper. Presumably an unstable Pakistan is not a problem. This, of course was said while the Vice-President was meeting with officials in Russia. One would guess Crapper was not at the State Dinner for Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Senator Graham said: “Unfortunately, this isn’t the first questionable comment from the DNI Director. However, it should be the final straw. Three strikes and you’re out.”

This would all be amusing if it were not so deadly dangerous. Hopefully, he will be put out to pasture soon so that he might spend his days in the shade, fishing in Lake Wishewaukee. Have a slow day.
