This is the way Maryland’s Democratic Governor, Martin O’Malley, refers to the situation in Wisconsin today. I used to give people from my home state the benefit of the doubt, but with Mayor Tommy D’Allessandro’s daughter, Nancy Pelosi, so far off the reservation and now this arrogant “threat” from Governor O’Malley….. as the raven of another Baltimorean quoth, “nevermore”.
Why is it when republicans are caught doing something wrong, they get fired (Agnew) or graciously (for the most part) step down or aside (Trent Lott, Nixon, Gingrich, etc. etc.), yet when Democrats do something wrong, the mainstream press automatically issues them a free pass, and they hang around forever? Governor O’Malley has struck a tone of defiance of democratic principles that I find dangerous; at best, it is disconcerting, and very probably inflammatory to his disciples, and to the participants in the trade union protests in Wisconsin.
O’Malley will get away with this insult to the Constitution. In my book, he has also moved from the ranks of civil debaters of important issues to a hapless, hopeless scary ideologue.
He is subtly calling for the recall of newly-elected republicans in the Wisconsin senate, unwilling to even grant them a full term as uncontested elected officials. His remarks are inciteful as opposed to insightful. He is representative of a great many democrats and liberals today who are unwilling to accept a political loss. They have had to accept losses so rarely that they believe control of all of government is no longer just a privilege; it is an entitlement.
