You cannot make this up. While the United States has been a beacon for the rest of the world in seeking to stamp out human rights violations, we are now on the defensive. The charges are from within and without.
Michael Posner, the Assistant Secretary of State, visited China to address the obvious human rights violations of the government of China. While there, he apologized for the United States which is not free of such violations. He was referring to the Arizona Immigration law. The Chinese did not goad him into the discussion. They did not ask questions about the Arizona law. He apparently felt it was necessary to raise the issue in a country with one of the worst human rights records in the world. He also raised the treatment of Muslim Americans and racial discrimination as examples of our human rights violations. Can you believe it?
Mr. Posner, referring to the law of Arizona, said it is “a troubling trend in our society, and an indication that we have to deal with issues of discrimination….”
The issue of illegal immigration and the feckless approach of the Obama Administration will be the subject of another paper. Suffice it to say here that when the federal government refuses to protect our people from illegal immigration, a result of which is Phoenix being ranked second of cities in the world for kidnappings, someone must do something. The law which was passed in Arizona mirrored the federal laws that are ignored by federal enforcement officials. The Arizona law also provided multiple provisions to protect the rights of citizens and non-citizens. It would seem enough for the Administration to challenge the law in court. Do we have to apologize to the Chinese as well?
The issue of one-world and open borders will also be addressed by another paper. It is important to recognize, however, that Mr. Posner, prior to his appointment by the Obama Administration, led an organization which is opposed to efforts to stop illegal immigration. It becomes easier to understand how his personal bias becomes policy of the United States.
The second charge of human rights violations involves the Apologist-in- Chief. On his watch and with the approval of Mr. Posner, for the first time the United States was accused by the United Nations Human Rights Council of human rights violations. What are the violations? They include maintaining the Guantanamo Bay prison, alleged torture by our troops abroad, the allowance of the death penalty, racial profiling (that one came from Mexico), poor prison conditions, and lack of religious tolerance. We are also accused of having high unemployment rates and unequal rights for gays and lesbians. Who are the accusers? Iran, various European countries, Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela and Mexico. For his part, Posner felt that we received a fair hearing from the rogue nations. Clearly, Iran would state that they have no human rights issues with gays and lesbians because President Ahmadinejad stated in a speech at Columbia University that there are none in his country.
The report of the Council was applauded by the ALCU. Imagine my surprise!
For his part, Obama acknowledged that our record is not perfect. Despite all our failings, I am proud of my country but I am certainly not proud of our government.
